What I want to accomplish when painting happens in two parts: the first is to transfer what I see in my mind onto the canvas; the second is to have my offering connect with the viewer.
I want to paint what I see and yet retain the spontaneity. For me, allowing the process to unfold naturally is the most difficult part, and the most rewarding. Painting requires that I understand and apply the mechanics of art (e.g., warm and cool, light and dark, detail and mass, etc.) Sometimes these are conscious choices, and other times it just happens. I believe the balance between skill and intuition, executed spontaneously, brings about the best results.
